A Guided Journey Through Christian Thought

The history of Christian theology is also the story of men and women who devoted their lives to understanding God, interpreting Scripture, and answering some of the most important questions ever asked. This course introduces many of the greatest Christian thinkers across two thousand years of Church history, exploring their ideas within their historical settings and examining how their work continues to influence Christian belief today. Rather than presenting theology as a collection of abstract concepts, the course follows the lives and writings of influential figures who helped shape the Christian intellectual tradition.

Students will encounter early Church leaders who defended the faith during times of persecution, theologians who clarified essential doctrines such as the Trinity and the nature of Christ, medieval scholars who united faith and reason, Reformers who challenged long-standing traditions, and modern voices who responded to the questions of an increasingly secular world. Along the way, the course introduces thinkers such as Ignatius of Antioch, Irenaeus, Athanasius, Augustine, Anselm, Thomas Aquinas, Martin Luther, John Calvin, John Wesley, Karl Barth, and C. S. Lewis. Rather than simply memorizing names and dates, you will discover what each person contributed, why those contributions mattered, and how they continue to shape theology, worship, ethics, and biblical interpretation across Christian traditions.

THEORIA Course Overview

Each lesson places these theologians within the cultural and historical challenges they faced, showing how questions about Scripture, salvation, the Church, human nature, free will, grace, suffering, and the character of God often arose from real problems confronting Christians in their own time. Designed for beginners as well as lifelong students of Scripture, the course explains complex ideas in clear, approachable language without sacrificing historical accuracy or theological depth. By the end, you will recognize the major figures who shaped Christian theology, understand the central ideas associated with each of them, and appreciate how their insights continue to influence churches, seminaries, and individual believers around the world. Courses are $19 a month and can be canceled at any time.
